EU Programme: Socrates II, Minerva: Information and communication technologies (ICT) in education.

Description: The Minerva Action under Socrates II (2000-2007) seeks to promote European co-operation in the field of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education.
Its 3 main objectives are: (a) to promote understanding among teachers, learners, decision-makers and the public at large of the implications of ODL and ICT for education; (b) to enhance pedagogical considerations in the development of ICT and multimedia products and services; and (c) to promote access to improved methods and educational resources, and to results and best practices.

Who may apply?: The Action is for students, teaching staff, educational institutions, and persons and bodies responsible for education systems at local, regional and national level.
Others may include local and regional bodies and organisations, educational associations, social partners, research centres, companies and consortia, professional bodies, trade organisations and chambers of commerce.

EU Support: Support can be for projects aimed at (a) developing educational resources and methods; (b) preparing studies of ODL and/or the use of new educational technologies; or (c) setting up information and communication services.
Projects will involve: (a) Understanding innovation; (b) Designing, developing and testing new methods and educational resources; (c) Providing access and supporting dissemination; and (e) Supporting the exchange of ideas and experience relating to ODL and the use of ICT in education.

Relevance for Lesser-Used Language communities: 30 countries: the 15 Member States of the European Union; the three EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and twelve associated countries: Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.
